AWAY FROM HOME · ORIGINAL GUIDE

A holiday plan for the whole household.

Before comparing providers, picture a normal day for your pet while you are away. Where will they sleep, who will be there, and what will stay familiar?

Choose the arrangement, then the business

Home visits, overnight sitting and boarding are different services. Ask each provider to spell out the hours of care and the time your pet may spend alone. A package name is not a timetable. If a shared boarding environment is likely to be difficult for your animal, discuss alternatives with your vet and prospective carers.

Check the setting

For boarding, ask to see where your pet will stay and how the daily routine works. A short trial may help you assess the arrangement. The RSPCA’s guidance recommends considering the animal’s comfort, checking the facility and arranging veterinary support. Its advice is a useful starting point, not an endorsement of any business here.

Prepare a useful handover

Create a short care sheet with feeding times, your vet’s instructions for any medication, your usual veterinary practice, an emergency contact and any handling concerns. Share it securely with the chosen carer, not in a public review or directory. Agree on what the carer should do if you cannot be reached.

Confirm the less obvious details

  • Exact drop-off and pickup windows, including public holidays.
  • Whether food, bedding and transport are included or supplied by you.
  • Required health records and how far ahead they need to be sent.
  • Cancellation terms and what happens if your return is delayed.
  • Who holds keys and how they will be returned.

Check identification details are current before leaving. Keep a copy of the agreed arrangement so both sides can refer to the same plan.
