SEASONAL CARE · ORIGINAL GUIDE

Plan for the day that changes.

A good care plan covers the ordinary day and the one that goes off schedule. Make the backup conversation part of the booking.

Agree on a hot-weather alternative

Ask walkers and day carers how they adjust activity, transport and outdoor time in hot conditions. RSPCA NSW advises access to shade and water and avoiding exercise in the heat. Never leave a pet in a parked car. If you suspect heatstroke, contact a veterinarian immediately rather than waiting for a directory reply.

Make the emergency handover usable

NSW Government’s Pet Ready guidance recommends planning what you will take, how you will transport animals and where you will go. Include your pet in the household plan. Check that carriers, leads, food, medication and current identification information are accessible to the person responsible for care.

Name a backup person

If you are away, agree on who can step in if you cannot be reached or the usual carer is unavailable. Check that the person knows the arrangement and can realistically get to the property. Store access details securely and share only what they need.

Keep the plan short enough to use

A one-page handover is often easier to find than a long message thread. Put the most urgent details first, date it, and update it whenever the routine changes. Keep your vet’s treatment instructions separate and intact.
